At home with Julia

Sadly only my Aussie readers will get the joke about Julia our much maligned Prime Minister, Julia Gillard who has a perchant for while jackets with deep necklines.

The white jacket Butterick 5619 is my latest from my long spring/summer sewing list to be completed. I made it for the Jewish New Year as it is a Rosh Hashanah custom to wear white garments. The color white symbolizes purity and renewal and on Rosh Hashanah, we wish to make a fresh start and renew ourselves for the new year.

The jacket is unlined and I've used Hong Kong seam bindings and French seams on the sleelves.  The jacket is a great fit, but I'm not sure the flying saucer neckline is for me.  The lapels are so big that a gust of wind fly the tip of the lapel into my red lipstick.  I'll use the pattern again, but will change it to a more conventional neckline.

The fabric for my jacket came from the Tessuti's roll sale. I shared a $10 roll with another buyer - there was just over 4 meters on the roll.  Not the greatest quality as it has a lot of spandex in the weave, but great for testing ideas.

I've completed a new silk chiffon blouse Butterick 5561. I struggled with this garment as the pieces didn't seem to fit together in the way they were intended.  I found the pleat in the bottom of the sleeve made the sleeves tight and puffy, so I removed it and re-cut to achieve a straight (straightish?) line.  Overall, not a winner, but pretty and wearable, especially under a jacket.
Next up - I had a cutting binge recently.  I cut my jacket, two Vogue knit dresses and two t-shirts.  I also have an unfinished faux suede leopard print trench jacket perilously close to finishing. I made great progress, then the weather warmed up and I lost motivation to complete. Now it is a little cooler the sewing room poltergiest has stolen the upper sleeve piece.  I have searched everywhere.  I have contacted the company I bought the fabric from.  They have none left!! My solution - I think - will be to cut the upper sleeve from an old black sweater and add a matching sweater trim somewhere else on the garment.

I am also very happy to announce that I was lucky enough to win Becky at Sew and So's fantastically generous gift voucher give away.  Becky makes lovely garments and is a great refashioner.

Finally, to my fellow Jewish sewers (are there any out there?) Le Shana Tova and to the rest of my friends happy sewing.  May this year be a sweet one.

  1. You sewed up a great outfit! It's a shame about the blouse not working out for you. I hadn't noticed the pattern before and thought it was really cute and the blouse looks fantastic in the picture. But, I'm a beginning sewer, so I'll avoid a pattern that a more experienced seamstress such as yourself has struggled with.

  3. I don't know what the appropriate greeting is for Rosh Hashanah but whatever it is, I send it to you. :) your jacket looks so crisp, and I bet your silk top feels like a dream.

  4. Don't despair, that sleeve will turn up eventually, probably in the most unlikely of places!

The blouse looks very interesting. I would love to see it on.

The jacket looks great. Nice pose...I always mean to try different poses but mostly end up standing in the same spot as always. Guess that's why I'm a sewer and not a photographer.

  5. You have a Prime Minister look about you in that outfit =) I love the jacket, the collar might not be practical but it sure looks great! The Butterick top also looks great, perfect to wear with cardigans and jackets.

    Enjoy your holiday!

  6. Did you know that today (Thurs) is Julia's 50th birthday? Such a timely reference!
I think your jacket and the blouse too look great, the jacket is beautifully finished inside, and I would love to see you wearing both pieces!
And I wish you all enjoyment of your New Year celebrations.

  7. Happy New Year! NY kids have Rosh Hashana off but I think my teenage son is using the time to sleep in and play video games. Great job on the jacket.

  8. I was reading this on my Google Reader feed and my first thought was "Julia Child?" (That's what I get for reading while hungry.)

Great finishing job on the jacket, and the blouse looks like it will be a nice layering piece.

And thanks for the compliment! (I still need your mailing address, by the way. The people at Colette said they'll ship it directly to you.)

  9. Lovely jacket and blouse. I hadn't noticed this pattern before it looks interesting and I love the fabric you chose to make it in. I hope your year goes well too.

  10. Very nice jacket. Lovely blouse.
When you figure out how to deal with sewing room poltergeist - do let me know. They certainly make life rather difficult.

  11. Very nice jacket -- looks nice inside and out. I'm not sure who Julia is but I bet she doesn't have quite so nice a jacket or shell to wear with it!

  12. I'm sure the sleeve will turn up when you're not looking for it - happens to me daily! The blouse looks lovely even though it was frustrating to sew. I've had a bit of a cutting binge myself lately. I seem to have found my sewing mojo again after it disappeared for some months. Nice jacket shot!

  13. Obviously, I do not know who is this "Julia". However, I am able to appreciate the wonder in that jacket ... I have the same problem with the flaps of one of my dresses, I think it is the same style lipstick flap and wind are not a good combination with it. Love the silk blouse, it looks wonderful!

  14. What a delightful jacket, although I understand the lapel dilemma. Sort of like wide cuffs that drag into everything in their path. The silk chiffon blouse looks so beautiful, lightweight but with that great collar.

  15. Happy New Year! It looks like a useful jacket, but if the lapels fly into the lipstick that's a problem. Julia doesn't seem to have the problem so maybe her lapels are held down by weighty interfacing or something. I do think the At Home With Julia series is a bit of a low blow though, even if some of the actors are adept with their impersonations.
