A red sky in the morning

...is the planet's warning. Oy vey the weather we have been having in Sydney is enough to stop climate change denial in its tracks. The dust rolled in from the Western desert on Tuesday morning. We woke to an eerie glow of red that faded to grey as the day wore on. There was so much dust in my house that you could write your name on floor. Got cleaned up only to be hit by another storm of lesser severity on Saturday morning. While we are calling it dust, it is actually top soil - an absolute disaster.

With the eternal dusting and Jewish High Holidays I have been doing more reflecting than sewing. The DVK dress is beautifully made, but too tight across the bust. It was so stupid not to make a muslin first. I used a tried and trusted pattern for knits, but it didn't have enough ease for a woven fabric.

The HHs are a time of reflection and resolution. My resolution - to look after my body more. I've been piling on the weight since my 50th and I hate it. So I say to myself, lose 10kgs. I will feel better and will have an entirely 'new' wardrobe of clothes that currently don't fit. Dianne's blouse still is not finished. I've been tired and busy and hope that she will understand. Will post pictures of the DVK soon - it is worth showing off, just not on me!

PS today I went to the gym!

  1. Go easy on yourself, Gail. I train six days a week, I run several days and I lift weights the other days. I'm not talking a few kilos, I'm talking big weights and yet still my waist thickens. It's age, hormones and whatever else our bodies do as they grow older. Eat well and get plenty of sleep and exercise. You will sew when you're ready.

  2. Wow, that photo looks like it was taken on the set of a post-apocalyptic movie. Very eerie indeed.

I agree with Carol, our bodies do make decisions without our consent sometimes (did I mention my acid reflux just halfway through my one morning cup of coffee last week?). Sometimes things move so quickly in our lives that we don't really stop to take care of ourselves, though. If your new exercise regimen makes you feel better and brings you to better health and happiness, I am excited for you.

  3. I saw on the news about the horrible "dust" cloud over parts of Australia. I was hoping that it wasn't where you are. I can't envision what that would be like. My daughter lives in Phoenix, AZ which is desert. They have sand storms sometimes. She says that when it rains, it rains sandy mud because of all the sand in the air. Of course, it rarely rains. We've had way more than our share of rain lately!!
I know what you mean about pounds piling on. I lost 50 pounds about the time of my 50th bday. I've gained about half of it back. My husband and I have challenged each other to see who can lose 35 pounds the quickest. Even though men usually loose faster than women I think I'll win!! We haven't picked out our rewards or consequences yet.

  4. Me too, gotta watch those pounds. My husband runs to keep his weight low, wish I could be a runner too but I hate it.

Hope you had an easy fast.

  5. Hope that your wierd weather settles itself down soon - dusting is not the most fun way to be spending your time. Congratulations on getting yourself to the gym!

  6. I'll join in on the weight declarations! I go to Weight Watchers and walk 3 miles a day in addition to having a very busy schedule. Still, the weight hangs on and on. It is an age thing. My body loves its pounds!

  7. A dust storm through the house would put me over the edge! Hang in there. Can't wait to see the dress. If it doesn't fit right now, it will soon! I haven't been"dieting" but decreasing input and increasing output. After many, many months...it is finally showing. I needed a lifestyle change not a diet.

  8. That's actually a beautiful picture but I'm sure it's not great to feel and have all that dust on your skin and stuff. Hope it clears up. Although I'm small, I've pack on the pounds myself but all due to insulin shots so it's frustrating because sometimes it's not in your control. Going to the gym certainly is a start. Let's both hang in there.

  10. Hey, that sounds like a great initiative. Usually when I feel too busy or stressed to exercise it's when I need it the most! I had a similar phase last year which made me go back to the gym. I think setting reasonable goals helped a lot to keep me going. I started with once a week and now 1,5 years later I am up to two :) Plus that I try to be more active in general, walk whenever I can and such.
