I am so happy with this dress which I made for my oldest daughter.
I used BWOF June 2009 115 and added sleeves from dress 129 - all Burda sleeves seem to be cut the same and can be interchanged with sleeveless dresses. There is nothing fancy in the sewing but the end result is fine. The seams are overlocked and it is lined with stretch jersey that I bought for $1 a metre. The fabric is from my bargain pile from the Remant Warehouse. It is black with flecks of blue in the lace. The total cost $7.95!
I think graduation dresses present the greatest challenge - well they did in the 80s and 90s anyway. So often what seemed like a great idea at the time looks tacky, daggy, age-inappropriate and just plain awful only a few years later. (But maybe that's half the fun!) I remember wearing stuck-on red fake fingernails that were knocked off every time I bumped something YUCK! I wish you (and your daughter) the very best of luck!
ReplyDeleteYou did a fabulous job! Looks wonderful.
ReplyDeleteHopefully you will get the fabric in the mail soon--sent in Sat.!
I love every and any variation on the LBD. I really like how you modified the sleeves. Wonderful!
ReplyDeleteGreat dress - well done! It's a bonus when the outcome is so super reasonably priced!
ReplyDeleteThat's a very petty dress, and looks like it has a great fit. Nice job.
ReplyDeleteGreat idea adding sleeves to give it an evening look. I love this dress from that issue but hadn't though about anything but a swim cover-up. I might have to steal your idea! It looks great, by the way. :)
ReplyDeleteIt's beautiful! Great job, Gail. I'd be thrilled, too.
ReplyDeleteI recognized the BWOF dress before even seeing it written out as such-- I like the addition of the sleeves!
ReplyDeleteVery lovely dress for your daughter. Yes, I see that she likes them as short as mine. A mother can't win this battle.
ReplyDeleteThe dress is gorgeous. I had not thought of it with sleeves either, but it really makes it perfect for a fancy dinner. Can't wait to see the formal dress.
ReplyDeleteI really like the dress. What a great idea to add the sleeves. I never think of imaginative things like everyone else!!!
ReplyDeleteI love the dress! Your daughter will steal the limelight at her graduation events in this dress!
ReplyDeleteThanks for your comments on my post about the Kennedys.
Lovely! Your daughter is very lucky to have a mom who makes such beautiful dresses!
ReplyDeleteThat dress is just simply gorgeous!!!!
ReplyDeleteThis is a lovely dress and just perfect for a young woman. I also read your last post with much interest. Your life sounds so much more exciting than mine!
ReplyDeleteThe dress looks great on your daughter. I remember Summerset used this pattern to make a top. The hole in the back gives it a unique look.
ReplyDeleteGreat graduation dress! It must be really satisfying to sew for a DD. I only have a DS and he prefers to shop for his own clothes. However, he still likes the boxers and sweatpants I make!
ReplyDeleteVery flattering on you DD. Your version shows more the versatility of this pattern. It can be very casual dress or top to sophisicated cocktail dress. With the additional of the sleeve this design can be worn in the cooler months with no worries of getting cold. Great dress. And don't you love it when they are satisfied with your creations?
ReplyDeleteOh this is super cool, the dress brings back memories to the best of 80's fashion. I would have loved a dress like that when I was a teen. The fit, the open back, the 3/4 sleeves and the black lace, it's just so right in every way.
ReplyDeleteIt's wonderful!
ReplyDeleteGorgeous dress. Lucky girl.
